Physiotherapy
Who do we see?
Our specialist paediatric physiotherapists treat children and young people aged 0–19 in Exeter, Mid, East and North Devon.
We provide specialist physiotherapy care on the neonatal wards at Exeter (RD&E) and Barnstaple (NDDH) hospitals.
We treat all conditions excluding Musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries for children of secondary school age. These are seen by adult services.
Where do we see them
We offer several locations depending on where you live. If you have a preference please let us know. We can also offer appointments at your child's school, nursery or home if appropriate.

The Honeylands Physiotherapy Team
Our 0–3 year-old service is run from the Honeylands building based on the Vranch House site.
As part of our role, we also provide the Physiotherapy service to babies on the Neonatal unit at RDUH. Once those babies are discharged from the unit, those that meet our neurodevelopmental criteria, will then be followed up by our specialist Physiotherapists at Honeylands for as long as clinically indicated. Some babies will also have a specific Neurodevelopmental assessment called a Bayley's assessment at 6 and 24 months old. You will be informed by your Physiotherapist or Paediatrician if your child requires this.
We accept referrals from GPs, Health visitors, Paediatricians and parents for any physical difficulty that a baby, toddler or pre-schooler is experiencing which can range from flat feet/toe walking, gross motor delay to Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and more.
We work closely with the wider Multidisciplinary team at both the RDUH hospital and CFHD Honeylands team to ensure optimum communication and holistic care for your child. Once your child starts nursery/school we will also liaise closely with education to help promote any support needed to encourage your child's independence and participation.

How to access this support
If your child/young person needs a service from Vranch House, any family member or carer, or anyone working with your child/young person can make a referral.
Treatment Options
Your child/young person's referral will be triaged by a physiotherapist, and a decision is made whether an assessment is required, signposting to other services or information to be provided.
After an assessment different treatment options are available. We are able to help children maximise their mobility and function through exercise, postural management, standing programmes and through play and recreational activities.

Exercise Programs
To improve movement, muscle strength, balance and overall physical function. Personalised plans are tailored to specific needs, age and abilities with collaborative goals.

Hydrotherapy
Thanks to donations we are able to maintain a specialist on-site hydrotherapy pool that is used daily. Personalised plans are tailored to specific needs, age and abilities with collaborative goals. A course of hydrotherapy runs for 6 weeks.

Hippotherapy
Hippotherapy is a form of physiotherapy using the shape and movement of the horse to stimulate and relax muscles. We use a mechanical horse (purchased with a grant from the MCF) to carry out daily sessions on site with outpatients and pupils. A course of hippotherapy runs for 6 weeks.

Innowalk
This is a piece of equipment that helps develop the muscles of children unable to walk, and helps many children to eventually progress to walking independently.

Holistic Bounce Therapy (HBT)
HBT uses a trampoline to facilitate movement, promote balance and influence muscle tone and strength. It provides many other benefits including aiding relaxation and sensory regulation.
